«Madrigals, Book 1» is the album by Claudio Monteverdi performed by Delitiæ Musicæ under the direction of Marco Longhini, released in 2002 by Naxos on CD.
Monteverdi's first book of madrigals for five voices, published in Venice in 1587, with a variety of light and shade, fluent melodies and intricate harmonies. The amorous texts contrast suffering with life or death. The CD closes with secular manuscript works, such as Lamento d'Olimpia, and pieces like Fuggi cor and Se d'un angel.
Recorded at the church of Novaglie, Verona, in June 2001. Total duration 63:47; catalogue number 8.555307.
For classical music listeners interested in Renaissance and Baroque repertoire and in Monteverdi's beginnings.
