«Opera Overtures» is the album of overtures by Florian Leopold Gassmann, released in 2009 by Naxos on CD, with the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra and Sylvia Alimena.
The album brings together ten opera overtures by the Bohemian composer Florian Leopold Gassmann, including «La contessina», «Il viaggiatore ridicolo» and «L'amore artigiano». Written in the mid-18th century, they combine the fast-slow-fast pattern with lively melodies, lyrical writing and sensitive orchestration.
The recording was made at the George Washington Masonic Memorial in Alexandria (Virginia) in 2006 and 2007; the Naxos catalogue number is 8.570421 and the total duration is 64:10.
For listeners interested in 18th-century operatic repertoire and lesser-known composers of the Classical period.
