«Quatuors à cordes» is the album by Alan Rawsthorne performed by the Maggini Quartet, released in 2006 by Naxos on CD.
The CD brings together the three string quartets published by Alan Rawsthorne (1905-1971) and the variations on a theme for two violins from 1937. The composer's evolution is evident in its growing concision and density: the first uses variation form, the second is more sober, and the third, austere and intense, closes his career.
One disc (catalogue number 8.570136), recorded at Potton Hall, Suffolk, from 13 to 15 December 2005.
For fans of chamber music and the 20th-century string quartet repertoire.
