«The Unique Thelonious Monk» is the jazz album by Thelonious Monk, released by Original Jazz Classics on CD, with recordings from 1956.
Recorded in 1956 at Van Gelder Studio, it brings together Thelonious Monk on piano with Oscar Pettiford on bass and Art Blakey on drums. Unlike other works focused on his own compositions, here Monk reinterprets jazz standards and subjects them to his angular, rhythmic language, turning popular melodies into bebop and post-bop pieces.
It is Thelonious Monk's second album for Riverside Records; this edition belongs to the Original Jazz Classics series.
For jazz fans, especially those who want to hear Monk interpreting standards with Oscar Pettiford and Art Blakey.
