«A Horse Walks Into a Bar» is David Grossman's dark comedy novel, published by Vintage in paperback (208 pages, in English).
Dov Greenstein, a veteran comedian, takes the stage at a small club in an Israeli city for his final performance. His monologue becomes a personal memoir: between jokes and silences, he evokes his mother, a Holocaust survivor; a stern father; and a youthful episode that ultimately changes the course of his life and affects several audience members.
Originally published in Hebrew in 2014; this English edition, translated by Jessica Cohen, won the Man Booker International Prize in 2017.
For readers of literary fiction, dark humor and book clubs interested in contemporary Israeli fiction.
