«A máquina de Joseph Walser» is the novel by Gonçalo M. Tavares, published by Editorial Caminho in hardcover (168 pages, in Portuguese).
Joseph Walser leads a life marked by strange routines: habitual humiliation at a factory, the care of an esoteric collection and, above all, the handling of a mysterious machine. When his city is occupied by an invading army, those routines collapse and Walser is caught between political intrigues, marital conflicts and a final, catastrophic encounter with his beloved machine.
Originally published in 2004, it is the second volume of Gonçalo M. Tavares's O Reino series, preceded by Jerusalém, winner of the Saramago Prize. In 2013 it was a candidate for the Best Translated Book Award.
