Alice McDermott's new novel, 'Absolution,' transports us to Saigon in 1963, where two women, Tricia and Charlene, form a fragile alliance as they navigate their roles as wives of men involved in the American Navy during the Vietnam War. Decades later, Charlene's daughter seeks out Tricia, and together they recall that crucial era, exploring themes of motherhood, sacrifice, and the search for forgiveness in a world marked by war and politics. With her characteristic delicacy, McDermott gives voice to the women who lived on the margins of this conflict, offering a profound reflection on obligation and sacrifice.
