«Adieu la vie, adieu l'amour» is the historical novel by Jean Vautrin, published by Pocket in paperback (337 pages, in French).

In April 1917, after the failure of the Chemin des Dames, four French soldiers of opposing origins —a worker, an aristocratic thief, a winemaker and a painter— survive among corpses in a trench. While waiting for a new assault, they recall their former lives and wonder if they will return; friendship and courage sustain them.
