«Adolphe» is the novel by Benjamin Constant, published by Flammarion in paperback format (221 pages, in French).
The novel follows Adolphe, a sensitive and introspective young man, in the love affair he has with Ellénore, an older woman. Through this bond, the narrative explores passion, the desire for individual freedom, and social conventions, and traces a meticulous psychological portrait of characters trapped between feeling and reason.
The work was originally published in 1816.

Benjamin Constant Botelho de Magalhães was a Brazilian military officer and political thinker. Primarily a positivist, influenced heavily by Auguste Comte, he was the founder of the positivist movement in Brazil, and later this led to his republican views. He left the Brazilian Positivist Society because of internal disagreements, but remained an ardent pupil of Comte until the end of his life.
