When Commissario Brunetti and his wife Paola receive a visit from a land registry inspector demanding documents for their apartment, nothing suggests the turn the case will take. Days later, the official dies in an accident before revealing something important to Brunetti. The investigation leads the commissario into Venice's darkest facets: drugs, blackmail, corruption and speculation, and to discover that in the city it pays to have friends in high places.
It is the ninth installment in the series dedicated to Commissario Brunetti. The work received the CWA Silver Dagger award.
Recommended for readers of crime and detective fiction seeking a classic intrigue set in Venice, with a charismatic protagonist and social criticism in the background.
Donna Leon is the American author of a series of crime novels set in Venice, Italy, featuring the fictional hero Commissario Guido Brunetti. The novels are written in English and have been translated into many foreign languages, although – at Leon's request – not into Italian, as she formerly lived there, still visits monthly, and prefers not to have recognition in the country.
