«Antes de la batalla» is a novel by Spanish writer Lourdes Ortiz, published in 1992 by Planeta in hardcover (380 pages, in Spanish).
Set in Spain in the late eighties, the novel composes a collective portrait as vivid as it is unsettling. Its characters cling to illusions that deflate like soap bubbles; their lives seem empty, and both triumph and defeat are experienced without fuss, leaving a bitter residue of frustration and helplessness.
Part of the Autores españoles e hispanoamericanos collection; the hardcover edition has a dust jacket.
Aimed at readers of contemporary Spanish fiction and those seeking an ironic look at eighties Spain.
Lourdes Ortiz is a Spanish writer of novels, plays, poems and essays. She has worked for several different newspapers and magazines, including El País, El Mundo, and Diario 16, mainly focusing on social and political topics.
