En ella, Arenas narra su vida desde su infancia en la Cuba rural, pasando por su adolescencia como rebelde luchando por Fidel Castro, hasta su vida en la Cuba revolucionaria como homosexual y escritor perseguido. El gobierno castrista suprimió su escritura y lo persiguió por su homosexualidad hasta que finalmente fue encarcelado. Tras exiliarse de Cuba, se radicó en Nueva York, donde se suicidó en 1990 tras una larga lucha contra el SIDA. Esta edición de Círculo de Lectores, S.A. fue publicada en 2001 y cuenta con 343 páginas.

Reinaldo Arenas was a Cuban poet, novelist, and playwright who is known as a vocal critic of Fidel Castro, the Cuban Revolution, and the Cuban government. His memoir of the Cuban dissident movement and of being a political prisoner, Before Night Falls, was dictated after his escape to the United States during the 1980 Mariel boatlift and published posthumously. Arenas, who was dying of AIDS, killed himself in 1990.
