«As a Man Grows Older» is the novel by Italo Svevo, published by Penguin Classics in paperback (224 pages, in English).
The protagonist, Emilio Brentani, is a mature man who falls in love with the young Angiolina and believes he has found a new beginning in her. The relationship turns into a comedy of misunderstandings that drags him toward a definitive loss. With irony and humanity, Italo Svevo paints a portrait of indecision and self-deception.
Translated from Italian into English by Beryl de Zoete. Edition published in 1977 in the Penguin Modern Classics series.
