In Belfondo, time seems to have stopped. This isolated and mysterious town is controlled by a master who decides the fate of its inhabitants, providing them with work in his factory and dictating how they should spend their time. The inhabitants of Belfondo are unaware of another reality, living in a limited universe from which no one has ever escaped. The novel presents characters such as Arcadio, the teacher forced to teach reading and writing, Horacio, the undertaker in charge of writing epitaphs, Beremunda, the town's prostitute, and Dositeo, her brother, who secretly loves her. Their intertwined lives create a disturbing atmosphere where secrets are whispered and the truth is hidden, sustained by a precarious balance that crumbles when some begin to question their existence.
