«Black Beauty» is the children's and young adult novel by Anna Sewell, published by Parragon Publishing in hardcover (288 pages, in English).
Black Beauty narrates in the first person his life as a horse in Victorian England, from his early happy years to the successive owners he has. Some are kind and others cruel, and through his experiences the novel reflects on the good treatment of animals and denounces the abuses that horses suffered in the nineteenth century.
Originally published in 1877, the novel is subtitled The Autobiography of a Horse. This edition includes illustrations by Kate Aldous.
Intended for child and young adult readers, it is also suitable for adults who want to rediscover a classic about respect for animals.

Anna Sewell was an English novelist who is known for her only book, Black Beauty, a novel about a horse. She was born into a Quaker family in Norfolk and moved to London as a baby. Her mother, Mary Wright Sewell, was the author of popular children's books. Sewell never married and always lived with her parents, in Sussex, Gloucestershire and Norfolk. A chronic illness left her leading a life of invalidism, with trips to spa resorts in England and continental Europe. She joined her mother in carrying out charitable work and also edited her mother's books. Black Beauty was written between 1871 and 1877 and published a few months before Sewell's death.
