«Britannicus» is the tragedy by Jean Racine in the Bibliolycée school edition, published by Hachette Educ in paperback (256 pages, in French).
Set in Nero's palace, the play pits the young emperor against Britannicus, son of the previous emperor and legitimate heir, in a struggle for power in which Agrippina, Nero's mother, also takes part. Intrigues, kidnappings and the threat of poison mark a court dominated by manipulation and cruelty.

Jean-Baptiste Racine was a French dramatist, one of the three great playwrights of 17th-century France, along with Molière and Corneille, as well as an important literary figure in the Western tradition and world literature. Racine was primarily a tragedian, producing such "examples of neoclassical perfection" as Phèdre, Andromaque, and Athalie. He did write one comedy, Les Plaideurs, and a muted tragedy, Esther, for the young.
