In 1943, Helene Hannemann faces a mother's worst nightmare when the SS police break into her home to take her children and husband, all of Romani ethnicity. Despite being German, Helene refuses to abandon her family and accompanies them to Auschwitz. There, her profession as a nurse leads her to work in the camp hospital under the supervision of Dr. Mengele, who proposes that she run a nursery. In this desolate place, Helene becomes a refuge for the children, demonstrating the power of sacrifice and human dignity amidst the horror.
