«Casa de campo» is the novel by Chilean writer José Donoso, published in 1978 in paperback (498 pages, in Spanish).
The action takes place on a South American estate where the Ventura family spends the summer. When the adults go on an outing and leave the children alone —aged six to sixteen—, their games become a destructive force that brings to light the power relations, oppression and decadence of the aristocratic world.
Edition in the Biblioteca Breve collection (no. 439); the novel received the Premio de la Crítica de Narrativa Castellana in 1978.
For readers of Latin American narrative and contemporary fiction, with regular presence on school reading lists.

José Manuel Donoso Yáñez, was a Chilean writer, journalist and professor. He lived most of his life in Chile, although he spent many years in self-imposed exile in Mexico, the United States and Spain. Although he stated that he had left Chile in the 1960s for personal reasons, after 1973 his exile was also a form of protest against the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. He returned to Chile in 1981 and lived there until his death in 1996.
