«Cauterio» is the novel by Lucía Lijtmaer, published by Editorial Anagrama in 2022 in paperback (222 pages, in Spanish).
In the summer of 2014, a young woman abandoned by her partner flees Barcelona for Madrid with a secret and the certainty that the apocalypse is approaching. Four centuries earlier, Deborah Moody, known as «the most dangerous woman in the world», emigrates to North America with another secret. Their voices weave two intertwined stories about violence, hypocrisy, witches and healers, with gentrified Barcelona and Salem as opposing settings. Faced with self-destruction, the author proposes burning everything to cauterize.
Narrativas hispánicas, number 690. First edition published on March 2, 2022.
For readers of contemporary fiction interested in dual-timeline narratives, gender roles and social criticism, with echoes of Bret Easton Ellis and Mercè Rodoreda.
