«Ce que je sais de Vera Candida» is the literary fiction novel by Véronique Ovaldé, published by Éditions de l'Olivier in paperback (300 pages, in French).
In an imaginary South America, three women of the same lineage seem condemned to the same fate: giving birth to a daughter without being able to reveal the father's name. Rose, Violette and Vera Candida are bold and freedom-loving, but only the third dares to try to break the curse. Vera flees the island of Vatapuna and settles in Lahomeria, where she hopes for a life without a past until the journalist Itxaga endangers her longing.
The book won the Grand Prix des lectrices de Elle 2010 and the Prix Renaudot des lycéens in 2009. French edition originally published in 2009.
Recommended for readers of contemporary French fiction seeking a fable about female inheritance, freedom and identity in an imaginary tropical setting.
