La narrativa emula el estilo de Walter Scott y explora temas de lealtad, traición y las nostalgias aristocráticas del autor. El protagonista urde una alianza con España para liberar al monarca del yugo de su primer ministro, un plan que culmina en tragedia debido a la indecisión de los participantes y la infidelidad del propio rey.
