Escrita por Alfred de Vigny en 1826, la trama recrea la atmósfera de una época basada en las memorias de los cardenales Retz y Richelieu, narrando la ambiciosa conspiración de Enrique d'Effiat, marqués de Cinq-Mars, contra el cardenal Richelieu bajo el reinado de Luis XIII. La narrativa emula el estilo de Walter Scott y explora temas de lealtad, traición y las nostalgias aristocráticas del autor. El protagonista urde una alianza con España para liberar al monarca del yugo de su primer ministro, un plan que culmina en tragedia debido a la indecisión de los participantes y la infidelidad del propio rey.
