«Damals war es Friedrich» is the historical young adult novel by Hans Peter Richter, published by DTV Deutscher Taschenbuch in paperback (176 pages, in German).
Two friends grow up in the same building and share a desk, but the rise of Nazism marks their lives differently: Friedrich, from a Jewish family, suffers growing discrimination, while his friend, trapped by the social climate, feels increasingly less able to help him. The novel moves from a protected childhood towards everyday persecution.
Originally published in 1961, it was awarded the Mildred L. Batchelder Award in 1972. It belongs to the dtv pocket collection (number 7800).
A common school reading and a gateway to the history of Nazism for young and teenage readers.
