«Das Französische Testament» is the novel by Andreï Makine, published by Wilhelm Heyne Verlag in paperback (332 pages, in German).
Aljoscha spends his summers with his French grandmother Charlotte in Saranza, by the Siberian steppe. A trunk with photos and memories of Charlotte's youth in Paris reveals to him the poetry of the fin de siècle, encounters with Marcel Proust and the tsar's visit, a world that contrasts with the gray Soviet present. That double heritage makes him a seeker, and only a trip to Paris can clarify his identity.
Originally published in French as Le Testament français, it was awarded the Prix Goncourt and Prix Médicis in 1995. First installment of the series «Dreams of My Russian Summers».
For readers of literary and historical fiction interested in memory, identity and the contrast between Western Europe and the Soviet Union.
