Roma Ligocka, born in Kraków in 1938 to a Jewish family, lived in the ghetto as a child and escaped with her mother shortly before its liquidation. She survived in hiding with false papers; her red coat moved a Polish family who took them in. Years later, watching Schindler's List, she recognised herself in that girl and decided to tell her story.
Originally published in 2000, it includes reproductions of the author's paintings and was nominated for the Jewish Quarterly-Wingate Prize in 2003.
