«De nachtwacht» is the historical novel by Sarah Waters published by Nijgh & Van Ditmar in paperback (437 pages, in Dutch).
The story follows four Londoners —three women and a young man— whose lives are marked by the Second World War. The narrative moves backwards from 1947 to 1941, gradually revealing the secrets and forbidden relationships that shaped their present, amid bombings, darkened streets and the search for freedom in times of repression.
Dutch translation by Marion Op den Camp. Work originally published in English as «The Night Watch» in 2006. It was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the Orange Prize.
Recommended for readers of historical fiction and queer narrative seeking an intimate portrait of wartime London and its emotional aftermath.
