«Der Butt» is a novel by Günter Grass, published by Luchterhand in hardcover (693 pages, in German).
The tale of the fisherman and his wife is inverted: here the man, guided by a talking flounder, makes history, while Ilsebill, his eternal companion, appears as a cook seeking to end hunger. Grass blends myth, history and satire from prehistory to the missiles, with a women's tribunal in Berlin in 1974.
The novel is set in Danzig Bay and some editions title it «Der Butt: Roman».
For German-language readers interested in 20th-century European fiction and the work of Günter Grass.
Günter Wilhelm Grass was a German novelist, poet, playwright, illustrator, graphic artist, sculptor, and recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature.
