«Der Fall von Madrid» is the novel by Rafael Chirbes, published by Heyne in paperback (332 pages, in German).
The novel is set in Madrid the day before Franco's death. Furniture manufacturer José Ricart prepares for his 75th birthday, while his family and guests —along with a worker outside the celebration— embody the tension and uncertainty of a society sensing the end of the dictatorship. Chirbes alternates the perspectives of several characters to offer a choral view.
Second installment of Rafael Chirbes's trilogy. Original work published as «La caída de Madrid» in 2000; German translation by Dagmar Ploetz.
