«Die Welt en gros en detail» is Claudio Magris's essay collection, published by Carl Hanser in hardcover (340 pages, in German).
A nameless hero embarks on a journey that starts in a café and ends in the adjacent park, but between those two points a whole world pulses. Nine excursions traverse reality, fantasy and emotional life, and their path crosses comic or tragic destinies of obscure or celebrated figures.
The book was originally published in Italian as «Microcosmi»; this German edition was translated by Ragni Maria Gschwend. It won the Strega Prize 1997 and the Leipzig Book Award 2001.
A work for readers of literary essays, travel literature and Italian culture.
Claudio Magris is an Italian scholar, translator and writer. He was a senator for Friuli-Venezia Giulia from 1994 to 1996.
