«Purgatorio» is the second volume of the epic poem «Divina Commedia» by Dante Alighieri (Mondadori Education, paperback, 633 pages, in Italian).
Dante ascends Mount Purgatory accompanied by Virgil. On its seven terraces the seven deadly sins are purged: penitent souls advance in a state of change and prayer, in contrast with the immobility of Hell. The journey culminates in the Eden at the summit, where Virgil takes his leave and Beatrice takes over as guide.
