«Edward Hopper: Portraits of America» is Wieland Schmied's art criticism essay, published by Prestel Publishing in paperback (125 pages, in English).
The book brings together a selection of Edward Hopper's oils and watercolors and analyzes them as portraits of American life: empty towns, solitary figures in offices, and serene New England landscapes. It proposes that these compositions, the result of a life devoted to observing human nature, convey an enigmatic uncertainty that speaks to the American postwar experience.
For readers interested in modern art, American realist painting, and art criticism.
