«El Cid» is the historical novel by José Luis Corral Lafuente, published by Círculo de Lectores in paperback (476 pages, in Spanish).
The starting point is the figure of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, the Cid, viewed from a human and realistic perspective, far from the hero idealized by tradition. The narrative follows his adventures and dwells on his doubts, longings, and decisions within the framework of medieval Spain, with battles, loyalties, and political intrigues.
José Luis Corral is a professor of Medieval History at the University of Zaragoza. The work was originally published in 2000; this edition is from 2003.
For readers of historical fiction and for those who want to discover the human side of a myth of Spanish history.
