«El cuento de la criada» is the dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood, published by Ediciones B in paperback (382 pages, in Spanish).
In the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian state that emerged from the United States, fertile women called handmaids must bear the children of the commanders. The testimony of the handmaid Offred interweaves her present of oppression with her former life in a reflection on power, freedom, and resistance.
The novel is the first part of the series «El cuento de la criada». The translation is by Elsa Mateo Blanco; its original title is «The Handmaid's Tale». It belongs to the Afluentes collection.
It will interest readers of classic dystopias such as «1984» or «Brave New World», and reading clubs; the work has been compared to both novels.
