«El cumpleaños de Juan Ángel» is the verse novel by Uruguayan writer Mario Benedetti, published by Alfaguara in paperback (85 pages, in Spanish).
The work takes place over a single day: the protagonist wakes up saying he is eight years old and, over the course of the day, keeps changing age until he finally claims to be thirty-five. Through this metamorphosis, Benedetti reflects on identity, time and reality, with poetic language and an ironic tone.
The work belongs to the Alfaguara Bolsillo collection, of which it is number 1; the edition is from 1998.
For readers of poetry and Latin American literature, especially those interested in Benedetti's experimental narrative.
Mario Benedetti Farrugia, was a Uruguayan journalist, novelist, and poet and an integral member of the Generación del 45.
