«El escándalo» is the novel by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, published by Salvat in paperback (280 pages, in Spanish).
The novel follows Fabián Conde, a man of disorderly habits who, swept along by events, must review his life and answer for what he has done. Set in nineteenth-century Spain, the story addresses moral conscience, faith, and the possibility of redemption through personal conflicts of strong dramatic tension.
The novel was originally published in 1875; this edition, from 1982, belongs to the Biblioteca Básica Salvat collection, number 57.

Pedro Antonio de Alarcón y Ariza was a nineteenth-century Spanish novelist, known best for his novel El sombrero de tres picos (1874), an adaptation of popular traditions which provides a description of village life in Alarcón's native region of Andalusia. It was the basis for Hugo Wolf's opera Der Corregidor (1897); for Riccardo Zandonai's opera La farsa amorosa (1933); and Manuel de Falla's ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (1919).
