«El gentilhombre europeo» is the historical fiction novel by José Luis de Vilallonga, published by Tusquets Editores S.A. in paperback.
A boy observes, between curiosity and concern, the secrets and contradictions of his aristocratic family, the Vallehermoso, grandees of Spain. In the twenties and thirties, while they assure that everything in their palace remains unchanged, he senses the first signs of decline: the marchioness boasts of her relationship with Primo de Rivera and his father wants him to study with the Jesuits. Little by little he discovers that family appearances hide a very different reality.
The novel belongs to the Fábula collection of Tusquets Editores; the 1997 edition has 304 pages.
For readers of historical fiction and Spanish narrative, especially those who appreciate portraits of high society and its decline.

José Luis de Vilallonga y Cabeza de Vaca, 9th Marquess of Castellbell, GE was a Spanish nobleman, author, socialite and film actor. His peculiar character, described as "a mixture of aristocratic arrogance, self-confidence and unconcern", brought him frequent enmities with other public figures. He was known to be a multifaceted, charming, elegant and playboy-like figure. At his death in 2007, Vilallonga was referred to by several newspapers as "the last dandy".
