In a small and isolated town in Tennessee, the lives of several characters intertwine. John Westley Rattner, a young man who matures quickly, is forced to work to help his mother after his father's murder. The perpetrator of the crime is Marion Sylder, an alcohol smuggler who benefits from the prohibition. Unexpectedly, a relationship arises between them. Years ago, Arthur Ownby, known as Uncle Ather, decides to live in nature to get away from civilization, where he finds a corpse in his well.

Cormac McCarthy was an American author who wrote twelve novels, two plays, five screenplays, and three short stories, spanning the Western, post-apocalyptic, and Southern Gothic genres. His works often include graphic depictions of violence, and his writing style is characterized by a sparse use of punctuation and attribution. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American novelists.
