«El hermano bastardo de Dios» is the novel by José Luis Coll, published in 1987 by Círculo de Lectores in hardcover (191 pages, in Spanish).
The book reconstructs the Spanish Civil War from the perspective of a child, José Luis Coll himself, who records with innocence the absurdity and cruelty of a conflict between brothers. With a melancholic tone and humor, it reflects on the loss of innocence, the adult world and the suspicion that reality obeys absurdity, not God.
José Luis Coll (1931-2007) is the author of this work, framed within twentieth-century Spanish narrative. The edition includes an introduction by Gonzalo Torrente Ballester.
For readers of Spanish narrative interested in the memory of the Civil War and in the more serious and melancholic side of José Luis Coll.
