«El hombre solo» is the thriller by Bernardo Atxaga, published by Ediciones B in paperback (426 pages, in Spanish).
Carlos, a fighter forced to make peace with his past, endures a five-day wait that feels eternal in a basement that is also a pool and a hotel on the outskirts of Barcelona. Fear stretches the hours and sets off a countdown in which the protagonist must confront the living and the dead who made him a man alone.
Originally published in Basque in 1993 as «Gizona bere bakardadean», it received the Critics' Prize for Narrative in Basque; this Spanish-language edition is from 1999.
For readers of contemporary fiction and Basque narrative; Atxaga is also the author of «Obabakoak», National Literature Prize winner.
