The Marquis of Roccaverdina is a gruff and rude landowner who lives on his lands, occupied with his business and oblivious to the world around him. He shares his life with Agripina, a beautiful peasant woman who is his maid, lover, and almost his slave. The Marquis gives her in marriage to a trusted man, demanding that they both live in chastity. Over time, he is tormented by the suspicion that the spouses have broken their promise, and jealousy leads him to kill the husband. From this moment on, the novel focuses on the Marquis's internal struggle between remorse, guilt, and fear.
Luigi Capuana was an Italian author and journalist and one of the main exponents of Verismo. He was a contemporary of Giovanni Verga, both having been born in the province of Catania within a year of each other. He was also one of the first Italian authors influenced by the works of Émile Zola, French author and creator of naturalism. His critical theories on naturalism envisaged the ultimate fusion of the novel into a purely scientific, impersonal, case-history.
