El Rosario de Mahoma is a historical novel by Gerardo Muñoz Lorente that narrates the siege of the city of Melilla by the army of the Sultan of Morocco between December 1774 and March 1775. For a hundred days, more than 8,000 bombs destroyed almost all the houses in the city. The inhabitants of Melilla baptized this bombardment as the Rosary of Muhammad. The novel captures a historical moment in which two empires, two neighboring but very different cultures, two very different ways of understanding politics, reality, and life, clashed. The two main characters are Mohammed III, Emperor of Morocco, and Juan Sherlock, the marshal sent by King Charles III of Spain to defend Melilla.
