«El sombrero de tres picos» is the comic novel by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, published by Ediciones Cátedra in paperback (176 pages, in Spanish).
Set in an Andalusian village, the story of the cunning tío Lucas and the beautiful Frasquita poses a comic conflict between realism and the sainete, with impressionistic touches. The omniscient, mocking narrator leads the anecdote with irony to an unexpected outcome.
The edition by Arcadio López-Casanova, published in 2005 in the Letras Hispánicas collection, presents a work originally published in 1874.
Recommended for students of Spanish literature and for readers aged 13 and up.

Pedro Antonio de Alarcón y Ariza was a nineteenth-century Spanish novelist, known best for his novel El sombrero de tres picos (1874), an adaptation of popular traditions which provides a description of village life in Alarcón's native region of Andalusia. It was the basis for Hugo Wolf's opera Der Corregidor (1897); for Riccardo Zandonai's opera La farsa amorosa (1933); and Manuel de Falla's ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (1919).
