In this autobiography, Nina Berberova narrates the life of Russian exiles in Paris. Berberova's story as a writer begins in Berlin, then in Paris, and later in the United States. She lived in Paris from 1925 to 1950, when she settled in the United States, where she worked for Princeton and Yale universities.

Nina Nikolayevna Berberova was a Russian writer who chronicled the lives of anti-communist Russian refugees in Paris in her short stories and novels. She visited post-Soviet Russia. Her 1965 revision of the Constance Garnett translation of Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina with Leonard J. Kent was considered by the academic Zoja Pavlovskis-Petit to be the best translation before 2000.
