In 1847, two ships of the British Navy, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, are trapped in the Arctic ice. In their longed-for search for the Northwest Passage, they seem to have failed. Unable to do anything to continue their march and complete their expedition, surrounded by polar cold and imminent dangers, they can only wait for the thaw to allow them to escape. Little by little, the days go by and the survival conditions become more extreme; temperatures exceeding fifty degrees below zero, scarce food supplies, the deterioration of the ships or the arrival of diseases are undermining the crew's hope. As if that were not enough, the strange presence of a bestial and mysterious creature makes the men believe that they are facing not only the most adverse natural conditions, but also supernatural forces that, at times, exceed their beliefs and their reason. Over time and the arrival of the first deaths, ghosts such as rebellion, mutiny or cannibalism make their appearance on the scene, in a desolate panorama. Based on real events, *The Terror* is a magnificent novel in which Dan Simmons makes the reader feel, numb, one more of the crew members lost in the Pole.
