«El vecino de abajo» is a contemporary fiction novel by Mercedes Abad, published by Alfaguara in hardcover (272 pages, in Spanish).
The orderly, silent life of a translator falls apart when the neighbor downstairs starts renovation works: hammering, drilling and sawing from eight in the morning to eight at night. Overwhelmed by an unfamiliar fury, the protagonist can only think of destroying him, and the story follows her progressive unravelling and the plans she weaves with a few accomplices, with an ironic tone about friendship and sanity.
The novel belongs to Alfaguara's Hispánica collection and was published on April 13, 2007.
For readers of contemporary fiction who enjoy irony and characters on the edge of losing their minds.
