«Extinct» is the natural science essay by Anton Gill and Alex West, published by Channel 4 Books in hardcover (256 pages, in English).
The book, based on the British documentary series Extinct, reconstructs the life and disappearance of six species: mammoth, saber-toothed tiger, Irish elk, dodo, great auk and Tasmanian tiger. With photographs, it examines the role of disease, adaptation, climate change and human action in their extinction, and how scientists have interpreted their fossils.
Published in October 2001, it is the companion book to the Channel 4 documentary series of the same name, produced by Wall to Wall.
Recommended for fans of natural history, evolution and nature documentaries.
Anton Gill is a British writer of historical fiction and nonfiction. He won the H. H. Wingate Award for non-fiction for The Journey Back From Hell, an account of the lives of survivors after their liberation from Nazi concentration camps.
