Firmin is a novel told through the voice of a rat. Born in the basement of a bookstore, Firmin develops an insatiable hunger for literature by gnawing on the books around him. As he explores the streets of his decaying neighborhood, his loneliness, fear, and self-consciousness become surprisingly human. The story explores redemption through literature and nostalgia for a world that values bookstores and unique characters.
Samuel Phillips Savage was an American novelist and poet, best known for his 2006 novel Firmin: Adventures of a Metropolitan Lowlife. Other published works are The Cry of the Sloth, The Criminal Life of Effie O, and Glass.
