Firmin is the story of a book-loving rat with literary inclinations. Born in a basement of a used bookstore in Boston's Scollay Square neighborhood, Firmin makes his way through a litter of twelve hungry pups by gnawing his way out of the trash and into the written word. Learning to read by gnawing on the pages of books, he immerses himself in literature and begins to identify more with the characters in books than with his own kind. His love of books leads him on a quest for friendship and understanding, which he finds in the bookseller Norman, a lonely man and also a bit of an oddball. As Scollay Square begins to change and be demolished, Firmin faces loss and loneliness, but finds solace in the world of books.

Samuel Phillips Savage was an American novelist and poet, best known for his 2006 novel Firmin: Adventures of a Metropolitan Lowlife. Other published works are The Cry of the Sloth, The Criminal Life of Effie O, and Glass.
