Set in a prison cell, the play brings together the warder and three prisoners: a man condemned to death, a young man who admires him without limit, and a thief consumed by jealousy. In that closed space, power and desire are stretched to the limit, and tragedy is born from an absent woman whom two of the inmates covet under the gaze of the condemned man.
A one-act play premiered in 1949 at the Théâtre des Mathurins. Jean Genet revised this play in 1985; this 1988 edition publishes the new version for the first time. It is number 1967 in the Folio collection.
