«Histoire d'une vie» is the autobiographical account by Aharon Appelfeld, published by Contemporary French Fiction in paperback, in French.
The author evokes his childhood in Czernowitz (Bukovina), his parents, assimilated Jews, and his grandparents, with their simple spirituality; also the scenes of persecution, the years of wandering, the arrival in Palestine, and the place of silence in his writing. He avoids conventional autobiography and offers keys to access his work.
The book won the 2004 Prix Médicis étranger. This French edition is a translation from the Hebrew by Valérie Zenatti.
For readers of memoirs and of twentieth-century Israeli literature, as well as for those who wish to enter Appelfeld's work.
