In this work, Jacques Le Goff examines the links between memory and history, two tools of historical reflection, and analyzes how societies remember and shape their past. The journey goes from Antiquity to the present day and addresses oppositions such as past/present and ancient/modern, with a proposal for historical methodology and a reflection on collective memory and identity.

For historians, social science students and readers interested in theory of history and cultural memory.
